Learning how to write descriptive paragraphs can benefit you in any type of writing where you have to describe something such as advertisements, cover letters for your books, writing short stories or novels, and other types of writing.

When you are writing an advertisement, you want to describe the product in such a way that customers will purchase your product.

If you write a cover letter for a book you want published, you would have to describe part of the summary and your background so publishers will take an interest in your book and your accomplishments.

That is also the same for writing a book or short story. You need to write descriptive sentences or paragraphs about the settings you used and the main character or other characters.

Another example of a descriptive paragraph would be to describe a scene such as the one that is pictured in this block.

Instructions
Step 1
Describing a product

If you are chosen to write a description of a product for an advertising company, you would want to do the best job possible because you would want them to accept your advertisement.

Let's say for example that you need to write a description of a brand new sweeper. You are allowed to use the sweeper to see what you think about it, and then you have to write your description. You would first identify the brand name of the sweeper and describe the features by thinking of the following questions: Is it an upright? Does it have bags or is it bagless? Can you use it on the floor as well as on the carpet? Does it pick up the dirt easily? Is it easy to clean? Is it easy to use? What other features does this sweeper have? Why should customers want to buy this sweeper?

After you list the questions and the answers on a sheet of paper, you want to organize your paragraph by first starting with a topic sentence. Your topic sentence should grab your readers' attention so they will continue reading the advertisement.

When you have your topic sentence written, you can write a descriptive paragraph of your product. You need to describe the features and why they are important, where customers can purchase the product, and how much the product costs.

Step 2
Cover letters

When you have written a book, you want to write a cover letter about your book and why you are qualified to write that book.

You will write a descriptive paragraph about your book. You will include the name of your book and a brief summary. In your summary, you need to include some adjectives that will describe your book.

For example: This is a suspenseful book about a young couple who will move into their new home, which is a mansion. However, as Penny and Ron enter the living room, they sense something mysterious that they didn't sense the day before when they saw it with their Realtor. They noticed pictures on the wall that weren't there earlier. Penny continued looking through the house and focused on how the house looked, but she didn't notice that Ron disappeared. She heard noises, but she thought she imagined it, so she continued walking around until she realized Ron wasn't with her.

This paragraph has started to build suspense and readers know that Ron and Penny were going to move into a mansion. They also know there are pictures on the wall, and they know something is mysterious about the house.

Step 3
Settings

Describing settings is another way you can write descriptive paragraphs.

When you think about a setting for your short story or book, you want to describe the main setting. It will be easy for you to include your description in your book if you write a summary of your setting. You need to start with a topic sentence such as where the setting is located. If it's a building, you will want to start with a description of the outside. Where is the building located? What does it look like on the outside? Are there trees, bushes, parking, grass, or what?

Then, you need to describe the inside of the building? What does it look like? How many rooms are inside? How many floors? What is the color scheme? Is it decorated? Does it have a fresh, clean look, or does it have a dilapidated or deserted look?

After you list these questions, you can start with a topic sentence such as: The inside of the building is newly remodeled.

Then, you can continue describing the inside by organizing the answers to the questions above. This will help you have a realistic view of your setting, so you can write it in your book.

Step 4
Scenes in pictures

Another way to write a descriptive paragraph is to describe a scene such as the picture of the dock in the introduction.

You can look at the picture and write a description of what you see such as the dock, boats, and water.

You would start with a topic sentence and then describe what you see. For example: The picture looked like someone left their boats there.

After that, you can describe the picture.
