How to make a paper bag Indian vest

Dressing the part

Whether you are preparing for a  Thanksgiving feast or just playing "cowboys and Indians," a paper sack makes the perfect vest for the "lil' Injun" in your group.  This project is quick, easy, and a great art project for children from pre-school to middle elementary.

There is some adult preparation required to create the "vests," but once this is done, you can let your children use their imagination to design a one-of-a-kind piece of Native American art!

Instructions
Step 1
Preparing the sack

Creating a sack vest is not rocket science, but there are some steps that must be followed.  The first is to staple the flap on the back side.  To do this, keep the sack flat, and staple the "flap" that creates the sack bottom to one side, as pictured.  Be careful not to staple through both sides of the sack, or it won't open properly for the vest.

Step 2
Neckline, please!

Now you are ready to cut the neckline.  Cut through all thicknesses of the bottom edge (including the flap) in a half-moon to create the neckline.

Step 3
Make a front slit...

Starting at the bottom opening of the sack, cut straight up the sack all the way to the neckline to create a front opening.

Step 4
Now the armholes...

Carefully cut the armholes on each side by starting approximately 1" from the top and cutting a half-moon out of each side. Be very careful  to only cut through the front thickness.  Do not cut through the back flap!

Step 5
Let’s make some fringe!

Now it's time to cut some "fringe."  Make short slits along the bottom edge of the back "flap" - and repeat this along the bottom edge of the vest.  You can curl this fringe around a pencil, or you can leave it flat.

Step 6
Cover any printing...

If your sack came from a grocery store and has printing, you can cut out pieces of craft or construction paper to glue over this in a decorative pattern.

Step 7
Let’s get creative!

Now the fun begins.  Let your children decorate the vest with crayons, markers and craft paper.  Each child can individualize his/her vest into a one-of-a-kind work of art.

For fun accessories, create a headband and "feathers" out of craft or construction paper.  String pasta and toasted oat cereal to create a "necklace".  Enjoy!

Things Needed
Paper sack - plain sacks work best, but grocery sacks will do. Ice cream sacks are great for smaller children.

Stapler
Crayons, magic markers
Craft paper, construction paper

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and staple the flap as described.
Be careful not to cut through all thicknesses of the sack when creating armholes
If you want to get creative, cut the front opening in a zig-zag pattern instead of straight across.
Make really decorative vests by attaching a few feathers with glue. Or, add some flat jewels or buttons.
Remember, it's just a paper sack. If you mess up or tear it, toss the sack and start over!
